Best Small Business Printer: Brother MFC-J4510DW Review

Brother MFC-J4510DW: Overview

After a previous review of the Brother’s HL-6180DW Monochrome Laser Printer, the next logical review would be of a colour printer and Brother was kind enough to send over its MFC-J4510DW.  More than just a pretty face, this printer has a small footprint and provides fast, reliable printing for smaller offices and work groups.  Wireless flexibility is a must these days for printers and the Brother MFC-J4510DW delivers in this area.

The Breakdown

The Brother MFC-J4510DW took me about 5 minutes to set up – and that includes breaking down the box for recycling!  One installed, the gorgeous touch screen shows success and we’re ready to roll!  The first thing you notice about this sleek printer is it’s compact size and fresh design (no more rubber buttons, monochromatic menus or unattractive paper trays sticking out of every side) – and with built-in handles on either side, moving the printer from one desk to another is simple to do.

With 4 “high-yield” cartridges, Brother lists 27ppm for colour and black documents and my test print of a 50 page document was printed in just under 2 minutes which is pretty good for an inkjet and the best thing is that there was not one dreaded paper jam!

The print quality itself is smooth and black prints well over other colours however, the colours themselves are not overly bright. I would not use this printer for presentation-quality documents but this should not be a big issue for everyday printing at home or in a small office or work group.  Photo printing on photo paper is good – similar to what you would find at drug store. Other reviewers have reported bleeding issues, but this wasn’t the case in our tests.

Wireless printing options were easy to use and this device works well with the standard wireless printing tools: AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Brother iPrint&Scan, Cortado Workplace and Wi-Fi Direct.

Brother is notorious for pricey ink cartridges but, in this case the costs comparable with other printers in the same market.  Its Innobella™ Super High Yield cartridges works out to 2.5 cents pp for black and 1.9 cents pp for colour.

Final thoughts:

At first glance, it’s easy to see that the Brother MFC-J4510DW is here to wow!  A sleek design coupled with a responsive and bright touch screen makes this device very attractive for any home office or smaller work group.  Intuitive to set up and use, the print speeds are fast for an inkjet and print quality is good.  Brighter print colours and higher capacity paper tray would give this printer a higher rating overall.  This printer is rated 4/5.
